To One Bred for Ornament

Kerry Carnahan

You sniff as I draw near

to tell if I’m hostile

Beneath your limbs I sprawl

drunk in marvelous grass

Molecules sail

across the mirage

we call the distance in between us

waving pennants stitched

with aromatic rings

enlaced by terms

grown ever more volatile,

yet in accordance

with the jittery truce

drawn at the heart

of all matter
